How did you get to where you are today?
My journey into the insurance industry happened by default. I was at University and was offered a summer job by my old football manager who owned a Consulting Engineering business. He originally employed me to do CAD operating work but he was then awarded a contract from Royal Sun Alliance which he asked me to manage. From that point on I have been involved in the industry.
I set up React in 2003 as I believed we could offer our customers and clients a service that was driven by customer care, quality and efficiency. We wanted to simplify the service and take the stress away from our clients and their policyholders.
What’s the biggest challenge facing your sector of the industry?
The industry uses varying technology so we must ensure that each system and control is properly utilised for our clients.
How are you and your business dealing with this?
This is an ongoing programme of training for all the staff and operatives. Accuracy is the key.
Out of your business achievements, what are you most proud of and why?
Getting my BSc Degree in Building Engineering & Management. Having left school at 15, I never thought I would have gone to University and graduated.
What advice would you give to anyone starting out in insurance, claims or related services.
The insurance industry is a great industry to be involved in. It’s very challenging and the opportunities that it can bring are fantastic. The chance to travel with major insurance companies and loss adjusters as well as the variety of projects that you can get involved with are tremendous. I also think there is a passion in parts of the industry to develop skills and encourage talented young individuals to grow.
If you could change anything what would you do to make the insurance industry "Better tomorrow"?
I would like to see more consistency in the industry. Customer service could be improved to allow a clearer understanding on policy cover and what policyholders are entitled to claim for. Then, when a claim is made, it would be great if we could all work collaboratively to make the service quick, seamless and more cost effective.
What's your top tip for being productive?
Throughout my career I have produced a “to do list”. On that list I must have 10 items to be done minimum. This helps me to set timescales and allows me to maximise what needs to be done. As someone once said, “fail to prepare, prepare to fail”.
What gadget can't you live without?
My iPhone. Some may say that is sad but the capability modern technology provides is awesome.
Talent or Perseverance?
Talent.
What do you do to switch off or escape from work?
I enjoy going to the gym, boxing and although too old to play football, I love to go and watch my old amateur team or the local Junior clubs.
